DEATH OF LAOCOON

The model for this illustration is the famous Roman marble statue, in the Vatican Museum, depicting the death of Laocoon and his sons. This masterpiece of Hellenistic sculpture was found in Rome in 1506 in the ruins of the palace of Titus.

Michelangelo considered it to be one of the greatest masterpieces of Roman art.
